第十一届光子和电磁晶体结构国际研讨会

活动介绍

会议名称(英文):11th International Symposium on Photonic and Electromagnetic Crystal Structures

所属学科:基础物理学,原子和分子物理,光学
所在城市:上海市  黄浦区
主办单位:复旦大学物理系
联系人:Ms. Wenjing Li

会议背景介绍:

Photonic and electromagnetic crystals have demonstrated unprecedented ability to manipulate the behavior of photons and have emerged as an important new class of optical materials. They represent a unique platform for the study of photon-matter interactions and exhibit great potential for a wide variety of device applications. Continued developments in theory, simulation, and fabrication have led to ever more intricate and functional photonic-crystal structures and devices. Novel photonic devices, such as ultra-small channel add/drop filtering devices, new types of lasers and photonic-crystal fibers, chip-scale sensors, and ultra-efficient photovoltaic cells, are developing rapidly. Construction of fully three-dimensional photonic crystals continues to be an important aim for the development of photonic chips.

Metamaterials are artificially materials with electromagnetic properties that may not occur in nature. Gaining properties from the designed subwavelength structures, metamaterials have offered a wealth of new phenomena, including negative refraction, superlensing, and cloaking. Over the past decade, great progress has been made to understand their fundamental properties and potential applications. Exciting new devices have been demonstrated at microwave and terahertz frequencies, and the metamaterials field continues to push this technology to shorter wavelengths. Recently, active and gain-enhanced metamaterials have emerged as new candidates for novel photonic and electromagnetic devices.

Plasmonics is an emerging branch in photonics aiming to shrink current photonic devices to the nanoscale based on surface and particle plasmons on metals. Research in this area has already proven fruitful by improving the efficiency of light-emitting diodes. Promising results have also been achieved to demonstrate improved efficiency and reduced costs in solar cells via metallic nanoparticles. In fact, plasmonic materials have already been proposed for applications in high-resolution lithography, ultra-sensitive sensing, and microelectronics.

The PECS-XI will focus on three main topics, each divided into three tracks: theory and fundamentals, fabrications and measurements, and novel applications.

     · Photonic Crystals
     · Metamaterials
     · Plasmonics

Recent developments in these areas have created an atmosphere of excitement in anticipation of the next series of imminent technological breakthroughs. In PECS-XI, we will review recent significant advances in each of these fields and discuss future research directions. For each field, we solicit contributions in the areas of theory and fundamentals, fabrication and characterization, and novel device applications. Please join us on May 11-15, 2014 in Shanghai, China, for what promise to be a stimulating and exciting research conference.
